Cefadroxil monohydrate
Indications/Uses
UTI due to E. coli, P. mirabilis, Klebsiella spp. Skin & skin tissue infection due to Staph &/or Strep. Pharyngitis & tonsillitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults Uncomplicated UTI 1-2 g daily in a single dose or 2 divided doses. Other UTI 2 g daily in 2 divided doses. Skin & skin tissue infections 1 g daily in a single dose or 2 divided doses. Pharyngitis, tonsillitis 1 g daily in a single dose or 2 divided doses for 10 days. Childn UTI 30 mg/kg/day to be given in divided dose 12 hrly. Pharyngitis, tonsillitis, impetigo 30 mg/kg/day in a single dose or in divided dose 12 hrly. Skin & other soft tissue infections 30 mg/kg/day in divided dose 12 hrly. For treatment of β-hemolytic streptococcal infections, doses should be given for min 10 days. Childn <1 yr 25 mg/kg/day in divided doses 12 hrly for min 10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ allergy to penicillin. Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea (CDAD) has reported after cefadroxil used. Prolonged use may cause overgrowth of cefadroxil non-sensitive microorganisms. Treatment should be discontinued if seizure occurs. May impair the ability to drive or operate the machinery. Kidney disorders. Pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Vag mycoses, thrush, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia, serum sickness-like reactions, anaphylactic shock, headache, insomnia, dizziness, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, glossitis, pseudomembranous colitis, cholestasis, idiosyncratic hepatic failure, slight increase of AST/ALT & alkaline phosphatase.
Drug Interactions
May cause false +ve in Coomb's test. Bacteriostatic antibiotics eg, tetracycline, erythromycin, sulfonamide, chloramphenicol, aminoglycosides, polymyxin B, colistin, or high dose of loop diuretics, anticoagulants, antiplatelets. Probenecids, OCs, cholestyramine.
