Meloxicam
Indications/Uses
Short-term symptomatic treatment of acute exacerbation of OA. Long-term symptomatic treatment of RA (chronic polyarthritis). Symptomatic treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
RA, ankylosing spondylitis 15 mg daily, may be reduced to 7.5 mg daily. OA 7.5 mg daily, may be increased to 15 mg daily. Patients w/ increased risk of side effects Initially 7.5 mg daily. Severe kidney failure w/ dialysis Should not exceed 7.5 mg daily. Max recommended dose: 15 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: May be taken w/ meals if GI discomfort occurs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active gastric ulcer, GI bleeding, cerebrovascular haemorrhage or other bleeding, severe liver or kidney insufficiency w/o dialysis. Patients who have shown asthma, nasal polyp, angioedema, or urticarial symptoms after usage of ASA or other NSAIDs. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents <15 yr.
Special Precautions
May increase the risk of serious CV thrombotic event, MI & stroke in patients who have CV disease or any risk factor of CV disease. Hypertensive patients. CHF & edema. Patients w/ a history of peptic ulcer or GI bleeding. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disorders, temporary liver dysfunction w/ increased transaminase & bilirubin level, kidney dysfunction w/ increased serum creatinine &/or urea level, skin & mucosal, hematological, CV, resp tract, & CNS disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Other high dose NSAIDs; ticlopidine, heparin; lithium, MTX; IUD; diuretic; antihypertensive drugs; cholestyramine; cyclosporins.
