Per g Betamethasone valerate 1 mg, neomycin sulfate 5 mg
Indications/Uses
Secondary bacterial infection, presumably present or resembling, among others: eczema in adults & childn, including atopic & discoid eczema; prurigo nodularis; psoriasis (except widespread plaque psoriasis); neurodermatoses, seborrhoeic dermatitis; contact sensitivity reaction. Secondary infections due to insect bites, anal & genital intertrigo.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply to the affected skin 2-3 times daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Rosacea, acne, & perioral dermatitis. Perianal & genital pruritus. Primary skin viral infections (herpes simplex, chickenpox). Treatment of primary skin infection lesions caused by fungi or bacteria, primary or secondary infections due to fungi, secondary infections due to Pseudomonas or Proteus spp. Not used for external otitis when there is eardrum perforation. Not recommended for use in large quantities or on large areas for a long time due to ototoxic & nephrotoxic potential of neomycin sulfate. Not recommended in pregnancy or lactation. Dermatosis in childn <2 yr, including dermatitis & napkin eruptions.
Special Precautions
Systemic treatment is required in case of persistent infection. Avoid long-term use on the face; ensure that no prep enters the eye if used on the eyelids. Monitor patients if used for psoriasis therapy. Increased risk of contact sensitization w/ prolonged use. Persistent infection may occur due to the masking effect of steroids. Avoid long-term continuous topical therapy especially in infants & childn. Neomycin sulfate: Nephrotoxic potential after significant systemic absorption. Reduced plasma clearance in renal failure.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity. HPA axis suppression & clinical signs of Cushing's syndrome w/ prolonged use of large amounts or therapy over large areas. Burning of the skin, pruritus, pigmentation changes, allergic contact dermatitis, & hypertrichosis. Severity of symptoms.
Drug Interactions
May enhance & prolong the resp depressant effect of neuromuscular blocking agents.
