Indications/Uses
Remission of various symptoms caused by resp obstructive disorders in bronchial asthma, acute, chronic & asthmatic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 10 mL once daily before bed or twice daily (in the morning & before bed). Childn ≥6 yr 5 mL once daily before bed or twice daily (in the morning & before bed), 3-6 yr 4-5 mL, 1-3 yr 3-4 mL, <1 yr 2-3 mL.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if the desired therapeutic effect cannot be achieved at the recommended dose; 12 hr prior to allergen tests. Do not exceed recommended dosage. Patients w/ hyperthyroidism (may be exacerbated), heart disease (may cause palpitation, arrhythmia, exacerbation & other symptoms), HTN (may further increase BP) & DM (may be exacerbated). Used only as an adjunctive therapy, not a substitute for inhaled corticosteroids & other anti-inflammatory drugs in bronchial asthma long-term management. May experience acute asthma episodes during long term use. Pregnancy or patients suspected of being pregnant. Interrupt nursing prior to treatment. Low birth wt infants & neonates. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Shock or anaphylactoid reaction; significant decrease in serum K levels. Palpitations, tachycardia; tremor, headache; nausea, vomiting; skin rash. Facial flushing; dizziness, insomnia, numbness in the legs; dry mouth, gastric discomfort; general fatigue, weakness, nasal obstruction, tinnitus.
Drug Interactions
May cause arrhythmias or cardiac arrest w/ catecholamines (eg, epinephrine & isoproterenol). May worsen hypokalemia & undesirable CV reactions (eg, tachycardia, arrhythmias) w/ xanthine derivatives (eg, theophylline, aminophylline hydrate & diprophylline). May decrease serum K levels which triggers arrhythmias w/ corticosteroids (eg, betamethasone, prednisolone & hydrocortisone Na succinate) or diuretics (eg, furosemide).
