Should be taken with food.

Contraindications
Diabetic coma; ketoacidosis; severe infection; trauma; other severe infections where buformin is unlikely to control the hyperglycaemia; renal or hepatic impairment; heart failure; recent MI; dehydration; alcoholism; conditions likely to predispose to lactic acidosis.

Special Precautions
Stop treatment temporarily 48 hrs before examinations using contrast media. Monitor renal function throughout therapy. Annual monitoring of vit B12 concentrations during long-term treatment.

Adverse Reactions
Anorexia; nausea; diarrhoea; hypoglycaemia; metallic taste; wt loss.
Potentially Fatal: Lactic acidosis. |
Drug Interactions
Drugs that may impair renal function. Increased risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycaemia with alcohol. Other hypoglycaemics; hyperglycaemics.

Description:
Mechanism of Action: Buformin delays absorption of glucose from the GI tract, increases insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake into cells and inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis. |
