IV/IMAdult 2-4 g in divided doses 12 hrly in severe infections. May be increased to 6-12 g in 2, 3, or 4 divided doses. Liver disease & biliary obstructive disease, kidney failure, haemodialysis Not >1-2 g.
Contraindications
History of allergy to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Severe liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Skin reactions, changes in Coomb's test result; reversible neutropenia, reduced haemoglobin & haematocrit; prolonged use may cause liver dysfunction; diarrhea, loss appetite, nausea, vomiting; pain (after IM inj) or phlebitis (after IV inj); shock, vomiting, pseudomembranous colitis, haemorrhage, pruritus, SJS.
Alcohol. May cause false +ve in urine glucose test using Benedict or Fehling. Concomitant use w/ aminoglycoside & other cephalosporins may cause kidney damage/nephrotoxicity.
