Ceftazidime
Indications/Uses
UTI, general infections, lower resp tract infection, skin & soft tissue infections, abdominal & biliary infections, bone & joint infections, hemodialysis, peritoneal, & continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis-associated infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1-6 g daily, may be given 8 or 12 hrly by IV/IM inj. UTI & less serious infections 500 mg or 1 g 12 hrly. Most infections 1 g 8 hrly or 2 g 12 hrly. Severe infections especially in immunocompromised patients including neutropenia 2 g 8 hrly or 12 hrly. Cystic fibrosis w/ pulmonary infections due to Pseudomonas sp 100-150 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses. Babies & childn >2 mth 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses. Fibrocystic, infected immunocompromised, meningitis Up to 150 mg/kg/day (max: 6 g daily) in 3 divided doses. <2 mth 25-60 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ type 1 hypersensitivity reaction or hypersensitivity to penicillins. Concomitant use w/ nephrotoxic drugs ie, aminoglycosides, furosemides. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis in IV administration, pain or inflammation after IM inj, maculopapular rash or urticaria, fever, angioedema, anaphylaxis (bronchospasm &/or hypotension), diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, thrush, colitis, candidosis vaginitis, headache, dizziness, paraesthesia, eosinophilia, +ve result of Coomb's test, thrombocytosis, increased SGOT/SGPT/LDH/GGT/alkaline phosphatase, BUN, serum creatinine, blood urea, transient leucocpenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, lymphocytosis.
