Ceftriaxone
Indications/Uses
For severe infection & resistant cases of susceptible gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria: resp tract infection, bacterial septicemia, bone & joint infection, intra-abdominal infections, skin infection & perioperative surgical prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g once daily depending on the severity of the infection. Max: 4 g daily. Infant & childn <12 yr For serious infections other than meningitis 50-75 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 12 hr. Max: 2 g daily. Meningitis 100 mg/kg daily in divided doses 12 hrly w/ or w/o a loading dose of 75 mg/kg. Max: 4 g daily. Surgical prophylaxis 1 g as a single dose ½-2 hr before surgery. To be administered IV, IM or bolus IV infusion.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomatitis, glossitis; headache & dizziness, skin reactions, eosinophilia, thrombocytosis, leucopenia, granulocytopenia & hemolytic anemia, transient elevations of SGOT, SGPT or BUN. Rarely, inflammatory reactions at inj site.
