Cefepime HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections due to susceptible organisms including UTI, skin & resp tract infections eg, severe nosocomial pneumonia infections caused by multi-resistant microorganisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Moderate to severe pneumonia 1-2 g IV every 12 hr for 10 days. Empiric therapy for febrile neutropenia 2 g IV every 8 hr for 7 days. Mild to moderate uncomplicated or complicated UTI 0.5-1 g IV every 12 hr for 7-10 days. Severe uncomplicated or complicated UTI including pyelonephritis, moderate to severe uncomplicated skin & skin structure 2 g IV every 12 hr for 10 days. Complicated intra-abdominal infections 2 g IV every 12 hr for 7-10 days in combination w/ metronidazole. All doses should be administered over approx 30 min. Childn (2 mth up to 16 yr) 50 mg/kg/dose every 12 hr (8 hrly for febrile neutropenic patients) for 7 days or until resolution of neutropenia.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins, penicillins or other β-lactam antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Pseudomembranous colitis. Renal impairment (CrCl <60 mL/min). Superinfection prothrombin time should be monitored. +ve direct Coombs' test during treatment. History of GI disease, particularly colitis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <2 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Local reactions including phlebitis, pain &/or inflammation, rash. Anaphylaxis including anaphylactic shock, transient leukopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis & thrombocytopenia.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ aminoglycosides.
