Indications/Uses
Serious infections due to susceptible organisms eg, Strep, pneumococcus, Staph & anaerobic bacteria in resp tract including emphysema, anaerobe pneumonitis & lung abscesses; skin & soft tissue; septicemia; intra-abdominal infections eg, peritonitis & intra-abdominal abscess; gynecologic infections including endometritis, pelvic cellulitis, post-op vag infections; bone & joint infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Serious infection 150-300 mg every 6 hr. Severe infection 300-450 mg every 6 hr. Childn Serious infection 3-6 mg/kg every 6 hr depending on the severity of the infection. β-haemolytic streptococcal infection Duration of therapy: At least 10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water & in an upright position.
Special Precautions
Should be reserved for serious infections. Not to be used in patients w/ URTIs. History of GI disease eg, colitis. Monitor for change in bowel frequency in elderly w/ severe infections sensitive to diarrhea. Atopic individuals. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organism eg, yeasts. Appropriate measure should be taken if superinfections occur. Surgical procedures should be performed in conjunction w/ antibiotic therapy. Periodically monitor liver & kidney function tests & blood counts during high-dose & prolonged therapy. Not to be used in the treatment of meningitis. Severe renal disease accompanied by severe metabolic disorders. Patients w/ hepatic or renal impairment. Lactation. Proper observation of organ function in newborn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Maculopapular rash & urticaria, generalized mild to moderate morbili form-like skin rashes, SJS, & anaphylaxis; colitis associated w/ antibiotics, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, & metallic taste in the mouth or bad taste after administration of high doses IV; jaundice, abnormal liver functions tests; renal dysfunction eg, azotemia, oliguria, &/or proteinuria; neutropenia (leucopenia) & eosinophilia; pruritis, vaginitis.
Drug Interactions
May enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents. Antagonism w/ erythromycin.
