Indications and Dosage

Topical/Cutaneous
Subacute and chronic psoriasis

Adult: As 0.5%, 2% gel: Apply onto affected ares(s) 1-4 times daily. As 5% emulsion: Apply thinly onto affected area(s) bid-tid. As 6 % cream; 2.3% soln: Apply onto affected area(s) once or twice daily. As 2% oint/aerosol foam; 0.5%, 1.5% lotion: Apply thinly onto affected area(s) 1-4 times daily.
Elderly: Same as adult dose.
Child: Same as adult dose.

Topical/Cutaneous
Dandruff, Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Adult: As 1%, 2.5% shampoo: Massage into we scalp. Leave for several minutes then rinse thoroughly. May use up to twice weekly.
Elderly: Same as adult dose.
Child: Same as adult dose.

Topical/Cutaneous
Psoriasis of skin and scalp

Adult: As a 5% emulsion: Apply a thin layer 2-3 times daily to affected areas, massage gently and leave to dry.
Elderly: Same as adult dose.
Child: >12 years Same as adult dose.

Contraindications

Application to inflamed or broken skin.

Special Precautions

Use with caution on the face, near eyes and mucous membranes. Do not apply to genital or rectal areas. Avoid use in patient with exacerbation of psoriasis. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and sunlamps for at least 24-72 hr after application. May stain clothes and hair. If undergoing Goeckerman treatment, all coal tar preparation should be removed from skin before exposure to radiation. Pregnancy and lactation.

Adverse Reactions

Skin irritation and acne-like skin eruptions. Photosensitivity.

Description:
Mechanism of Action: Coal tar has antipruritic, keratoplastic and keratolytic properties. It slows down excessive epidermal cell turnover and is often used topically either alone or in combination with other drugs (e.g. salicyclic acid, sulfur) in conditions such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis.
