Methylprednisolone
Indications/Uses
Inflammatory & allergic conditions eg, lupus erythematosus, autoimmune disease, allergic conjunctivitis, ulcerative colitis, endocrine & hematological disorders & rheumatic disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 4-48 mg daily. Clinical states including multiple sclerosis 160 mg daily for 1 wk followed by 64 mg daily for 1 mth.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Systemic fungal infections.
Special Precautions
Prolonged use may cause posterior subcapsular cataract, glaucoma w/ optic nerve damages & increased secondary fungal or viral ocular infections. Vaccination during treatment. TB. May inhibit growth in childn.
Adverse Reactions
Fluid & electrolyte imbalance; steroid myopathy, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, aseptic necrosis, vertebral compression & pathological fracture; peptic ulcer w/ tendency of perforation & bleeding, ulcerative esophagitis, gastric bleeding, bloating; increased ALT/SGPT, aspartate transaminase & alkaline phosphatase; dermatological diseases; -ve nitrogen balance; urticaria, allergic disease, anaphylactic & hypersensitivity reactions; increased intraocular tension, psychological disorders, pseudotumor cerebri, seizures; irregular menstruation, increased cushingoid states, hypophysis-adrenal suppression, reduced carbohydrate tolerance, manifestation of latent DM, increased oral hypoglycemics or insulin requirements in diabetic patients, growth suppression in childn; posterior subcapsular cataract, increased intraocular tension, exophthalmos, glaucoma; masked & activated latent infection.

Cyclosporin, phenobarb, phenytoin, rifampicin.
