Contents
Betamethasone 0.25 mg, dexchlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg
Indications/Uses
Allergic conditions where corticosteroid therapy is needed.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & child >12 yr 1 tsp 4-6 hrly. Max: 6 tsp/day; 6-12 yr ½ tsp 4-6 hrly. Max: 3 tsp/day; 2-6 yr ¼ tsp 4-6 hrly. Max: 1½ tsp/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Newborn & premature infants. Systemic fungal infections, MAOI therapy.
Special Precautions
Avoid long-term use. Hypothyroidism/cirrhosis; ocular herpes simplex, nonspecific ulcerative colitis, possibility of impending perforation, abscess or other pyogenic infections, diverticulitis, fresh intestinal anastomoses, active or latent peptic ulcer, renal insufficiency, HTN, osteoporosis, myasthenia gravis. Existing emotional instability or psychotic tendencies. Dietary salt restriction & K supplementation should be considered. Chickenpox; fulminating or disseminated TB. Dexchlorpheniramine maleate: Narrow-angle glaucoma, stenosing peptic ulcer, pyroduodenal obstruction, prostatic hypertrophy or bladder neck obstruction, CV disease. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <2 yr. Elderly >60 yr .
Adverse Reactions
Na & fluid retention, CHF, K loss, hypokalemic alkalosis, HTN; peptic ulcer, pancreatitis, abdominal distention, erosive esophagitis; menstrual irregularities, development of Cushingoid state, growth suppression, decreased carbohydrate tolerance, latent DM, increased insulin or oral hypoglycemic requirement in diabetics; hyperglycemia, glycosuric & -ve nitrogen balance; osteoporosis, loss of muscle mass, thrombophlebitis, masked sign of infection. Dexchlorpheniramine maleate: Drowsiness, CV, hematologic, neurologic, GI, genitourinary & resp reactions; rash, urticaria, anaphylactic shock, photosensitivity, excessive perspiration, chills, dryness mouth, nose & throat.
Drug Interactions
Phenobarb, phenytoin, rifampicin, ephedrine; K-depleting diuretics, cardiac glycosides, coumarin-type anticoagulants, NSAIDs & alcohol, ASA, MAOIs, TCA, barbiturates & other CNS depressants, antidiabetics, amphotericin B.
