Indications/Uses
Urethritis & vaginitis due to Trichomonas vaginalis, intestinal & hepatic amoebiasis, giardiasis due to Giardia lamblia. Prophylaxis of post-op anaerobic infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Rate of infusion: 5 mL/min. Treatment of identified bacterial infections in adult & childn >12 yr & patients who cannot receive oral treatment Adult 500 mg by IV infusion 8 hrly. Childn 7.5 mg/kg 8 hrly. Prophylaxis of post-abdominal surgery (esp in colorectal or gynecology) Adult 500 mg by IV infusion prior to surgery, then 500 mg/oral dose 8 hrly. Childn 7.5 mg/kg (1.5 mL/kg) 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ CNS disorders. Alcohol consumption. Blood test should be performed in prolonged treatment. Patients w/ severe hepatic disorders. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Vomiting, anorexia, epigastric pain, convulsion, peripheral neuropathy, taste disturbances, furred tongue, nausea, GI disturbances, urticaria, skin rash, pruritus, angioedema, anaphylaxis shock, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, ataxia, dark urine, mild leucopenia.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin & coumarin anticoagulants, cimetidine, disulfiram.
