Foetal distress, significant cephalopelvic disproportion, unfavorable presentation of the fetus, excess uterine distention; parity >4; elderly multiparae; previous uterine surgery; severe toxemia; amniotic fluid embolism; hypertonic uterine contractions; placenta praevia; cord presentation or prolapse; mechanical obstruction to delivery; predisposition to uterine rupture.

Borderline cephalopelvic disproportion; patients >35 yr. Monitor fetal heart rate and uterine motility. Do not employ for prolonged periods in resistant uterine inertia, severe preeclampsia, severe CV disorders. Discontinue in case of foetal distress or uterine hyperactivity. Risk of water intoxication (high doses over prolonged period). Restrict fluid intake by mouth.

Postpartum bleeding; neonatal jaundice; water retention; acute transient hypotension with flushing and reflex tachycardia (rapid IV).
Potentially Fatal: Death; anaphylactic reactions; fatal afibrinogenaemia; maternal deaths from severe hypertension and subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Prostaglandins, anaesthetics. Vasopressor effects of sympathomimetics may be enhanced.
