Desogestrel
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tab daily for 28 consecutive days, starting on 1st day of menstruation.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active venous thromboembolic disorder. Presence or history of severe hepatic disease. Progestogen-dependent tumours. Undiagnosed vag bleeding. Known or suspected pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Breast or liver cancer. Acute or chronic liver function disturbances, HTN, DM, ectopic pregnancy, chloasma. Jaundice &/or pruritus related to cholestasis; gallstone formation; porphyria; SLE; haemolytic uraemic syndrome; Sydenham's chorea; herpes gestationis; otosclerosis-related hearing loss; angioedema. Discontinue in the event of thrombosis. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
Adverse Reactions
Vag infection. Mood alterations, decreased libido. Headache. Contact lens intolerance. Nausea, vomiting. Acne, alopecia, rash, urticaria, erythema nodosum. Breast pain, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, ovarian cyst. Fatigue. Increased wt.
Drug Interactions
Increased hepatic metabolism w/ hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), barbiturates (eg, phenobarb), primidone, carbamazepine, rifampicin, oxcarbazepine, rifabutin, topiramate, felbamate, ritonavir, nelfinavir, griseofulvin & products containing St. John's wort. Plasma & tissue conc may be affected (eg, cyclosporine).
