Indications and Dosage

Oral
Acute diarrhoea

Adult: 9 g daily in divided doses for up to a Max of 7 days; daily dose may be doubled at the start of treatment. Treatment recommendations may vary among countries and individual products (refer to specific product guidelines).
Child: ≥2 years In addition to oral rehydration salts: 12 g daily in divided doses for 3 days, then 6 g daily in divided doses for 4 days. Max treatment duration: 7 days. Treatment recommendations may vary among countries and individual products (refer to specific product guidelines).

Oral
Chronic diarrhoea, Pain associated with functional bowel disease

Adult: 9 g daily in divided doses. Treatment recommendations may vary among countries and individual products (refer to specific product guidelines).

Reconstitution

Powder for oral susp: Stir thoroughly in half glass of water. For children, add 50 mL of water and stir thoroughly in the feeding bottle, or mixed with semi-liquid food (e.g. broth, stewed fruit, mashed vegetables, baby food).

Contraindications

Infants and children <2 years.

Special Precautions

Patient with possible bowel obstruction or history of severe chronic constipation. Avoid chronic use. Children ≥2 years. Pregnancy and lactation.

Adverse Reactions

Significant: Constipation.
Gastrointestinal disorders: Vomiting.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Rash.

Drug Interactions

May interfere with the absorption of other substances when administered simultaneously.

Action

Description:
Mechanism of Action: Dioctahedral smectite has a powerful coating property on the gastrointestinal mucosa. It protects the gastrointestinal mucosa by interacting with the glycoprotein of mucus, thus increasing the resistance of the mucosal gel in response to aggressive agents.
Synonym: diosmectite.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Not absorbed.
Metabolism: Not metabolised.
Excretion: Via faeces.
