Doxycycline hyclate
Indications/Uses
Resp tract, GI, UTI (including gonorrhoea), skin & soft tissue infections. Intestinal amoebiasis, acne, trachoma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >8 yr weighing >45 kg 1st day: 100 mg twice daily followed by 100 mg daily. Childn >8 yr weighing <45 kg 1st day: 4.4 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses, then 2.2 mg/kg/day. Severe infections 2.2 mg/kg/12 hr. Streptococcal infection Duration of treatment min 10 days. Acute gonorrhea 1st day: 200 mg & 100 mg at bedtime, then followed by 100 mg twice daily for 3 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ a full glass of water & remain in an upright position for at least 30 min. Avoid taking w/ dairy products.
Contraindications
Allergy to tetracycline.
Special Precautions
Liver impairment. Hepatotoxic drugs. Perform haematopoietic, liver & renal function test in long-term use. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <8 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, redness, urticaria, diarrhoeae, photosensitivity, increased BUN, haemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, eosinophilia.
Drug Interactions
Phenytoin, phenobarb, carbamazepine, minerals (Ca, Al, Mg, Fe).
