Hydroxyethyl starch
Indications/Uses
Adjunct to crystalloid soln for the treatment of hypovolaemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Blood loss & hematocrit up to approx 20 mL/kg/day equiv to 1.2 g hydroxyethyl starch/kg/day Patient weighing 70 kg 1,500 mL. Septic shock due to burns Adult Infusion rate approx 25 mL/kg/min & 12.5-25 mL/min or 1,000 mL in 40-80 min.
Contraindications
Critically ill adult patients including patients w/ sepsis. Severe liver disease; renal failure w/ oliguria or anuria not related to hypovolemia. Patients receiving dialysis treatment.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ pre-existing renal dysfunction. Discontinue use at the 1st sign of renal injury. Continue to monitor renal function in hospitalized patients for at least 90 days. Crystalloid soln should be given 1st in severe dehydration. Monitor liver & kidney function, fluid balance & serum electrolytes.
Adverse Reactions
Skin reactions; tachycardia, drop in BP, vertigo, nausea, vomiting; bronchospasm. Resp & cardiac arrest.
