Salbutamol
Indications/Uses
Acute attack of bronchospasm (status asthmaticus). Routine management of chronic bronchospasm unresponsive to conventional therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
2.5 mg 3-4 times daily by nebulisation.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity. Premature labour or threatened abortion during 1st & 2nd trimester of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Acute angle closure glaucoma in patients treated w/ combination of nebulised salbutamol & ipratropium Br. Acute severe asthma may be potentiated by hypoxia. Increased use deteriorates asthma control; monitor daily peak flow for patients at risk. Patients known to have received large doses of other sympathomimetic drugs; w/ thyrotoxicosis. Monitor patient response by lung function test. Monitor serum K levels. Concomitant use w/ xanthine derivatives, steroids & diuretics. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Fine tremor of skeletal muscle, usually the hands; peripheral vasodilation & small increase in heart rate; paradoxical bronchospasm; serious hypokalaemia; mouth & throat irritation.
Drug Interactions
Inhibited effects w/ β2-antagonist. Increased heavy HTN w/ monoamine oxidase group. Concomitant use w/ non selective β-blockers eg, propranolol.
