Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
UTI including prostatitis, urethritis & cervicitis gonorrhoea, GI infections including typhoid fever due to S. typhi, resp tract infection unless pneumonia due to Streptococcus, skin & soft tissue infection, bone & joint infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Mild/moderate UTI 250 mg twice daily. Severe UTI 500 mg twice daily. Mild/moderate resp tract, bone, joint, skin, soft tissue infections 250-500 mg twice daily. Severe resp tract, bone, joint, skin, soft tissue infections 500-750 mg twice daily. Chronic prostatitis, GI infections 500 mg twice daily. Acute gonorrheae 250 mg as a single dose. Acute osteomyelitis Doses should not be <750 mg twice daily. Duration of therapy for acute infections: 5-10 days. Treatment should be continued until at least 3 days after clinical symptoms subside.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy, lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment if pain, edema, inflammation of tendon & rupture. Patients w/ kidney disorders. Epilepsy or patients w/ CNS disorders. Prolonged use may cause overgrowth of less sensitive microorganisms. Avoid excessive sunlight exposure. May impair the ability to drive & operate machinery. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Tendonitis. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, GI disturbances, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, flatulence, anorexia, dysphagia; dizziness, headache, fatigue, insomnia, agitation, tremor; drug eruption, urticaria, macula erythematous, SJS, skin redness, pruritus, drug fever, anaphylactic/anaphylactoid; interstitial nephritis, kidney failure, polyuria, urinary retention, urethral bleeding, vaginitis, acidosis; hepatitis; tachycardia, palpitation, atrial flutter, ventricular ectopic, syncope, angina pectoris, MI, cardiopulmonary arrest, cerebral thrombosis, flushing, migraine; eosinophilia, leukocytopenia, leukocytosis, granulocytopenia; transient increase of blood transaminase & alkaline phosphatase level, cholestatic jaundice; transient increased BUN, creatinine & bilirubin; hyperglycemia.
Drug Interactions
Al- or Mg-hydroxyde containing antacids, theophylline, cyclosporin, probenecid, oral anticoagulant, metoclopramide.
