Ketoconazole
Indications/Uses
Systemic fungal infections. Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis not responsive to nystatin & other drugs.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 tab once daily. Severe infection: 2 tab daily. Childn >2 yr 5 mg/kg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Acute hepatic disease, cryptococcal meningitis.
Special Precautions
LFTs in chronic use. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, urticaria, pruritus. Less commonly, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, fever & chills, photophobia, paresthesias, gingival bleeding, thrombocytopenia, gynecomastia & impotence.
Drug Interactions
Cyclosporine. Reduced absorption w/ anticholinergics, antacids, H2-blockers, may increase prothrombin time in patients receiving coumarin derivatives.
